ABSTRACT While tomatoes can be grown year-round in a greenhouse, the high temperatures of tropical climates are a limitation. As such, cooling the growing environment is key to cultivating tomatoes in controlled environments during summer, but effective cooling systems are expensive and involve high production costs. The use of biostimulants has been reported to increase yield and can mitigate the effects of high temperature on greenhouse-grown tomatoes. Our hypothesis is that biostimulants can improve tomato yield, particularly in the event of stress during cultivation. Our aim was to assess the effects of three biostimulants on greenhouse-grown tomato plants in the summer under a tropical climate. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse on the Uberaba Campus of the Federal Institute of the Mineiro Triangle (IFTM). We used a completely randomized design consisting of a plot containing five plants, with 1.0 x 0.5 m spacing, an estimated density of 20,000 plants ha-1, and six repetitions. The three biostimulants applied were Alquifishmel®, Booster® and Stimulate®, compared to a control (plants with no biostimulant). Production, fruit quality, yield and plant growth were assessed. All three biostimulants improved yield by more than three metric tons per hectare in relation to the control, primarily due to the larger number of ripe fruits. It is suggested that the biostimulants mitigated heat stress, promoting a larger number of fruits per truss and resulting in higher yield.

RESUMO Embora o tomate possa ser cultivado durante todo o ano em casa de vegetação, as altas temperaturas dos climas tropicais são uma limitação. Assim, resfriar o ambiente de cultivo é fundamental para cultivar tomates em ambientes controlados durante o verão, mas sistemas de resfriamento eficazes são caros e envolvem altos custos de produção. O uso de bioestimulantes tem sido relatado para aumentar a produtividade e pode mitigar os efeitos da alta temperatura em tomateiros cultivados em casa de vegetação. Nossa hipótese é que os bioestimulantes podem melhorar a produtividade do tomateiro, principalmente em caso de estresse durante o cultivo. Nosso objetivo foi avaliar os efeitos de três bioestimulantes em plantas de tomate cultivadas em casa de vegetação no verão sob clima tropical. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação no Campus Uberaba do Instituto Federal do Triângulo Mineiro (IFTM). Utilizou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado com seis repetições, parcela contendo cinco plantas, com espaçamento de 1,0 x 0,5 m e densidade estimada de 20,000 plantas ha-1. Os três bioestimulantes aplicados foram Alquifishmel®, Booster® e Stimulate®, comparados a um controle (plantas sem bioestimulante). Foram avaliados a produção, a qualidade dos frutos, a produtividade e o crescimento das plantas. Todos os três bioestimulantes melhoraram a produtividade em mais de três toneladas por hectare em relação ao controle, principalmente devido ao maior número de frutos maduros. Sugere-se que os bioestimulantes atenuaram o estresse térmico, promovendo maior número de frutos por cacho, o que resultou em maior produtividade.

RESUMO O manejo do espaçamento entre plantas na melancia altera a competição das plantas por água, luz e nutrientes, pois a população de plantas influencia a produtividade da cultura, a morfologia do fruto e a qualidade. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o manejo do espaçamento entre plantas de dois híbridos de melancia quanto à morfologia, produtividade e qualidade dos frutos. Híbridos de melancia (NUN 21613 e NUN 21901) e os espaçamentos entre plantas (0,60, 0,80 e 1,0 m) e 2,5 m entre linhas de plantio foram estudados, no delineamento de blocos ao acaso em esquema fatorial 2 × 3, com cinco repetições. Firmeza do fruto, teor de sólidos solúveis totais, notas visuais e sensoriais aos 0, 7 e 14 dias após a colheita, comprimento do ramo principal da planta, massa fresca do fruto, número de frutos por planta e hectare e rendimento foram avaliados de agosto a dezembro de 2018. O maior espaçamento de plantio proporcionou melhor desenvolvimento vegetativo, maior produtividade e maior resistência do fruto da melancia à deterioração após a colheita. As características físico-químicas e sensoriais dos frutos não foram afetadas pelos espaçamentos e híbridos da melancia neste estudo.

ABSTRACT Plant spacing management in watermelon alters plant competition for water, light, and nutrients, influencing fruit yield, morphology, and quality. The study aimed to evaluate the spacing management between plants of two watermelon hybrids in terms of morphology and fruit yield and quality. Two watermelon hybrids (NUN 21613 and NUN 21901) and three plant spacings (0.60, 0.80 and 1.0 m with 2,5 m between rows) were studied in a randomized block design arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial scheme with five replications. Fruit firmness, the content of total soluble solids, visual, and sensorial notes at 0, 7 and 14 days after harvest, length of the main branch of the plant, fresh fruit mass, number of fruits per plant and per hectare, and fruit yield were evaluated from August to December 2018. The greater planting spacing provided better vegetative development, higher yield, and increased resistance of the watermelon fruit to deterioration after harvest. The physicochemical and sensory characteristics of the fruits were not affected by the spacing and hybrids of watermelon in this study.

RESUMO Os milhos especiais são cultivados o ano todo e de forma convencional, contudo, quando cultivados sob sistema de plantio direto (SPD) pode aumentar a produtividade das culturas. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o desempenho agronômico do milho doce e verde cultivados sob resíduos de diferentes coberturas e estádios de implantação do SPD. Dois experimentos foram conduzidos em delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, em cada uma das três áreas. Os experimentos consistiram da avaliação do milho doce e verde, simultaneamente, nas três áreas em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento do SPD: inicial (1 ano), transição (7 anos) e consolidação (19 anos); Seis tipos de cobertura: braquiária (B), milheto (M), crotalária (C), mistura de B + C, B + M e M + C. Avaliou-se a produção de massa seca (MS) das coberturas, as produtividades de espigas empalhadas e despalhadas, de palha e rendimento de grãos. A crotalária teve a maior produção de MS entre as coberturas estudadas, em todas as fases do SPD. A produtividade de espigas com ou sem casca no milho verde não foi influenciada pela fase do SPD. O cultivo de milho doce em áreas de transição e consolidação do SPD apresentou melhores rendimentos quando comparado à fase inicial do sistema.

ABSTRACT Special corn is cultivated all year conventionally round; however, its productivity increases when grown under a no-tillage system (NTS). This study aimed to evaluate the agronomic performance of sweet and green corn cultivated under residues of different cover crops and the NTS implantation stages. Two experiments were carried out in the randomized block design, with four replications, in each of the three areas. The experiments consisted of evaluating the sweet and green corn, simultaneously, in three areas at different stages of development of NTS: initial (1 year), transition (7 years), and consolidation (19 years) with six types of cover crops: Signal grass (SG), Pearl millet (PM), Sunn hemp (SH), a mixture of SG + SH, SG + PM, and PM + SH. The dry matter (DM) production of the cover crops, the productivity of husked and unhusked ears, straw, and grain yield were evaluated. The SH had the highest dry mass production among the studied cover crops in all phases of the NTS. The phase of the NTS did not influence the productivity of ears with or without husk in green corn. The cultivation of sweet corn in transition and consolidation areas of the NTS showed better yields when compared to the initial phase of the system.

RESUMO A formação de mudas é umas das fases mais importantes da cultura da alface. Desta forma, qualquer estratégia que vise obtenção de mudas de alta qualidade pode representar aumento de produtividade. Uma dessas formas tem sido a estimativa de atributos morfofisiológicos baseados nas propriedades ópticas. Com este estudo, o objetivo foi estimar quantitativamente variáveis biométricas da alface a partir de modelos paramétricos e não paramétricos baseados na resposta de imagens multiespectrais tomadas por câmara multiespectral. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, no município de Uberaba, MG, Brasil. Aos 20 dias após a semeadura foram capturadas imagens multiespectrais das plantas, utilizando-se para isto a câmara Survey 3 da MAPIR. Para compor os modelos de estimativa, juntamente com as bandas originais da câmara, foram calculados os índices de vegetação multiespectrais, a partir das bandas originais calibradas da câmara. As bandas B550, B660, and B850 e os índices derivados do infravermelho próximo contribuiram ao máximo para estimar os modelos das variáveis fisiológicas. Já a banda B850 foi a que mais contribuiu para as variáveis biométricas e nutricionais. A partir da banda do infravermelho próximo (B850) e índices derivados, foi possível estimar quase todas as variaveis agronômicas a partir de modelos gerados pelo algoritmo M5, com precisão de até 1,6% para rendimento quântico máximo. Conclui-se que é possível quantificar as variaveis biométricas, fisiológicas e nutricionais da alface por meio de câmara multiespectral. Dentre as bandas de câmeras Mapir, a B660 exibiu a maior variabilidade, mostrando que a faixa do vermelho foi a mais sensível.

ABSTRACT The formation of seedlings is one of the most important phases of lettuce cultivation. Therefore, any strategy that aims to obtain high-quality seedlings can increase productivity. One of these strategies is the prediction of morphophysiological attributes based on optical properties. The objective of this study was to quantitatively estimate the biometric variables of lettuce from parametric and non-parametric models based on the response of multispectral camera images. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in the municipality of Uberaba, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Twenty days after sowing, multispectral images of the plants were captured using a MAPIR Survey 3 camera. To compose the estimation models, along with the original bands of the camera, the multispectral vegetation indices were calculated using the calibrated original camera bands. Bands B550, B660, and B850 and the near-infrared indices contributed significantly to estimating the physiological variable models, with B850 contributing the most to the biometric and nutritional variables. From the near-infrared band (B850) and derived indices, it was possible to estimate all the agronomic variables from the models generated by the M5 algorithm, with an accuracy of up to 1.6% for the maximum quantum yield. Thus, it is possible to quantify the biometric, physiological, and nutritional variables of lettuce using a multispectral camera. Among the Mapir camera bands, B660 exhibited the greatest variability, showing that the red range was the most sensitive.
